Что такое богадельня и почему она так называется

Первая богадельня была создана христианской церковью в 542 г. В г. Лионе. В Беларуси богадельни с давних времен существовали в основном под названием «приходских госпиталей», и только в 1843 году было систематизировано разделение благотворительных заведений в соответствии с целями их функционирования, они были переименованы в «дома приюта для престарелых и немощных».

В целом, богадельня и есть дом престарелых и отличается от него не столько организационно, сколько по внутреннему содержанию. Современные богадельни стремятся стать обителью христианского духа, местом, где царит любовь в том понятии, как ее завещал нам Спаситель.
